We spent an hour and a half there. If we had lunch there and went into the Wonderlab we could have easily have spent at least another 2 hours here.

At the National Railway Museum there was a variety of different trains to view. There was an indoor small play area, model railways and a room full of glass cabinets which were filled with trains, boats and other historic items relating to the museum. There was also a gift shop linked to the museum and a gift shop linked to the Wonderlab.

One of our favourite parts was being able to go in the bullet train. The boys loved sitting in the seats and pretending they were going on a journey.

Our other favourite part was the road train. This took you from the National Railway Museum to York Minster. The train ride was £3.50 an adult and £2.50 a child for a one-way fare.

There is plenty of parking available in a hard standing carpark. There is also disabled parking spaces available. Parking is £10 for the day and is paid inside the museum. Once you've paid the parking charge in the museum, they give you the security gate code to be able to leave the carpark.

While at the National Railway Museum, you can stop for something to eat at their cafe linked to the Great Hall in the museum or their cafe linked to the Wonderlab. When walking past we saw the Great Hall cafe were selling sausage rolls served with salad and tortilla crisps for £6.95 and a family meal deal (2 children’s picnic bags, 2 hot meals and 2 cold drinks) for £30. There were also picnic benches by the bullet train to enjoy a picnic from home.

When we visited, our eldest was 3 years old and our youngest was 18 months old. We found this day out had something for everyone, no matter your age.
We found 3 sets of toilets, which changing facilities and accessibility toilets were also available in 2 of these sets.

We found the attraction ground flat and did not struggle to push the pushchair around. There were both stairs and lifts to gain access to the second floor.

Overall, we would visit again if we were in the area. When we saw staff, they were friendly and helpful. The museum had a range of trains, Wonderlab was attached to the museum (additional charge), well spread out toilets and had a small indoor play area for younger children, however we were slightly disappointed there was only one train for the children to go in and there wasn't really any interactive educational activities other than the Wonderlab, therefore we have rated this day out 4 stars out of 5.
