Burgh Castle, Great Yarmouth, NR31 9QB.

Burgh Castle is an English Heritage site. It was a 'Saxon Shore' fort built as part of the Roman network of coastal defences. Three of out four of the stone walls survived and they believe it is almost at it's original height making it one of the best preserved Roman monuments in Britain.

We spent an hour here, but could have spent longer if we explored the area more by going near to the water.

The walkway around Burgh Castle is grass however this is well maintained, therefore we did not struggle to push our pushchair around. The only area we found tight with the puschair was the gates as these were kissing gates.

At Burgh Castle there was no litter around and it was surrounded by long grass which encouraged lots of wildlife included bees and butterflies.

There is a pay and display car park on Butts Lane. For 2 hours parking this was £1.50. They also offered longer length of stays. The car park is open 8am-8pm.

Dogs are allowed at Burgh Castle, however need to be kept on a lead.

There is also a free guided tour on a Sunday at 2pm which is run by volunteers. This runs from May-September but is weather permitting. The tour starts at the interpretation shelter near the main car park.

There were no toilets at Burgh Castle.

Overall, we would visit again if we were in the area. We found Burgh Castle to quiet and peaceful and were amazed by how many butterflies were in the area. The only downfalls we had to this walk was there being no toilets on site and the gates being kissing gates instead of a typical fence gate. As a result, we have rated this walk 4 stars out of 5.

Date of visit: July 2024
